Topic:

Topic 1: BI Over Cloud

There are numerous operational reasons why CIOs would consider BI (business intelligence) SaaS(Software-as-a-service) for their organizations. CIOs can achieve economy of scale by letting an application service provider (ASP) manage data and deliver BI service over the wire. With this strategy, companies can focus on their core business while the data service provider manages day-to-day complexity of hosted solution. A hosted BI solution is appealing to the CIOS for its lower cost of ownership and gradual cost reduction over-time. With meticulous planning, companies can deliver their CRM, HR and ERP based BI solutions from cloud. If done right, BI over the cloud can provide tremendous amount of flexibility in the way organizations manage their data integration and analytics engagements.

BI over cloud has its own challenges and pitfalls. Application performance and security become incredibly complex, if not managed properly. Analytics performance is easily manageable when the transaction involves a few thousands of data elements; however performance challenges become visible when data volume becomes multi-millions of rows. Sending business sensitive data over the wire makes the organizations vulnerable from data security standpoint. Aggregate and analytics data is more sensitive than raw data in a competitive marketplace.

BI SaaS maturity model is evolving rapidly. Aggregating data for a large enterprise is a huge undertaking. Data is often scattered across various departments. Each department has its own preferred security model and data access mechanism. Similar data is stored and managed differently in different departments. Creating structured context and metadata organization becomes a lengthy engagement in large enterprises. Complex organization hierarchy and multi-level access requirements demands robust BI architecture for enterprise SaaS BIs. With appropriate data management strategies, BI over the cloud could become another effective tool in CIO’s arsenal to tame the ever-growing complexity in the organization.

Topic 2: Lessons Learned to Ensure Cloud Applications don’t Impact Revenue or Delay Rollouts; presented by Richard Stone

Cloud computing represents a compelling new way of providing business agility, flexibility, and time-to-value, but companies are learning the hard way that the ability to effectively manage application performance – and the associated data -- in the cloud must be a core component of their IT and business strategy from Day 1. Companies who deploy cloud-based applications without considering the unique characteristics of the cloud are surprised to find that one of the biggest issues facing them is their inability to detect and fix performance issues, resulting in user frustration, low adoption, reduced revenue and ultimately, failure to achieve the predicted ROI.

The cloud presents new challenges and imposes new rules for application architects, IT professionals, and line-of-business managers in the areas of user experience, availability, and performance. And the tricky part: how to monitor these to ensure a quality end-user experience while intelligently scaling capacity up and down.

In this presentation, we will look at how cloud computing is introducing a new level of IT complexity for managing applications and data. We will take a detailed look at how the new application delivery chain – often involving a dozen or more 3rd party service providers – can produce hidden and completely unforeseen interactions which result in the non-availability of applications and data, but which can be impossible to isolate and fix using traditional IT tools. We’ll also cover some of the more poorly understood aspects of the cloud such as geographic location, why service provider SLAs don’t measure what matters, and the impact that application architecture can have on your cloud ROI. We will illustrate the impact of all these issues using actual data from hundreds of millions of real user transactions in the cloud.

The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the 5 ‘best practices’ for implementing a successful cloud strategy.
